Fraienkenst - The Modern Prometheus

 Thinking Activity: Frankenstein

Hello Readers! This blog is in response to the thinking Activity of the Novel Frankenstein assigned by yesha ma'am, Department of English, MKBU. In this blog I am going to present my point of view and understanding of the questions connected with this Novel and it's major concept.

Mary Shelley:-

"Beware; for I am Fearless, and therefore powerful."  - Mary Shelley

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, was born in 1797 in London. She died in 1851. She was a English Romantic Novelist best known for her work Frankenstein. It is a work that is part of Gothic Novel. It is also often considered an early example of Science fiction. Her mature work on women's place in society is a vindication of the Rights of woman which calls for women and men to be educated equally. Her Notable works are below.

  • The last Man
  • The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck
  • Falkner
  • Travel book
  • Frankenstein

Frankenstein:-

Frankenstein or Modern Prometheus is an novel written by English author Mary Shelley. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.

Q.1 why victor was not to accept his a dream experiment it's results?

The Novel Frankenstein is about the creation of the creature by Victor Frankenstein and it's outcome. He wants to create a life - human being. It was an outcome of the death of his mother and victor Frankenstein is the main protagonist of the Novel. He is obsessed with scientific achievement and glory. Which drives him to discover the secret of manifesting life.

After creating a life, when Victor sees it at first, he completely disturbed by it. As per my point of view. Victor just created the creature. He was not having any kind of Idea or plan after making that. He was so passionate to create but he never thought about the horror of his creation. When he created the creature, the creation was totally unexpected and also un - accepted. He could not sleep that night and was wondering on streets and went to visit Henry and told about the disaster.

Q.2 What made Creature a monster?

In the Novel Frankenstein, monster is presented as a monster. But the question always lies behind it is that, what made him a monster. We would find that after his creation, do not have any understanding of earthly life. After the behaviour of his own creator , we can say rejected by his god, monster runs away, which is the first reason of his creator. Circumstances makes people a hero or villian. And circumstances comes from society. These events of making a person good or bad points out of the society. In the Frankenstein also, society makes creature a monster. Just because he is not like the others. These events made Creature a monster.

Q. 3  Why Society has rejected victor's Idea of the experiment and results of the experiment?

Here Mary Shelley contrast God's creation of Adam to Victor's creation of the monster. Victor sees his creation as beautiful and yet repugnant, versus the creation story taken from the Bible in which God sees his creative Adam as" good ". Society has rejected victor's Idea of the experiment and the results of the experiment, because in the Novel people believed in the chain of God.

Q.4 Appearance overpower reality?

As per my opinion. Yes, Appearance always overpowers reality. Generally i observed many people who believed blindly the stranger, just because he or she looked good from their looks. We always here that inner beauty is more powerful than outer beauty. But does it really, happen? No, we all always and first judge a person by his or her appearance. Nobody looks inner beauty and virtues. If a person look wise good we think a person is good but we can't say that a person with a less beautiful or ugly face is bad.

In Frankenstein, we can see that creature is ugly by outer appearance and that is the only reason for his rejection by the society. His creator is also not able to rejection by the society. His creator is also not to accept him because of his appearance. After such incidents he got converted into a monster by actions and a given thought process. So we can say that in our society people judge a person by his outer look and wealth not by their inner appearance and good virtues.

Q.5 Who is suffering from Deformity in the Novel ? Which kind of deformity and disability is there? Who decides what deformity is? ( Being Judgemental - Appearance matters )

"Secrets are generally terrible. Beauty is not hidden, only ugliness and deformity."
                  - L. M. Montgomery

Meaning of Deformity:-

"A Physical blemish or distortion or A normal or apathetic flaw or defect."

A simple meaning of Deformity is a person who has physical or outer damage. In the Novel victor is deformed. And creature is suffering from Deformity. Because he is not same as others. He is different from by emotions and body structure.

Deformity is something that society doesn't like. Society doesn't feel nice to seeing you, than you are not good enough and also don't deserve to be treated as normal human being. Society doesn't look our kind hearted, you are helping others. They only look at our deformity. Victor was suffering from Deformity, deformity of others. And in another sense, society is also suffering from Deformity as if becouse of that they are ignoring virtues of Creature through the novel. It means society and Victor both are villain. And we can also say that he is not born as villain rather it is made by society and his Creature.

Thus, we can say that this deformed Creature is not born but made and creature's deformity is a problem of comparison: resemblance to his creator's humanity only increase the ugliness of his appearance.
